Be Happy – Waste Less

Generally much of what we throw away still has some sort of value as a resource. Given that it took time, energy and resources to produce it in the first place if things can be reused or recycled this can help reduce our impact on the planet. Reuse schemes (furniture, clothes, mobile phones etc) also help benefit other people and make us feel better about all that stuff we want to get rid of.

Top tips for reducing the impact of your waste include:

  1. Recycling through your local system (check the Recyle Now website for details) and by reusing and repairing rather than binning.
  2. Rejecting goods which are over-packaged.
  3. Considering home composting. The Magpie Environmental Trust  provides a helpful page by page guide to composting and wormeries. You may also be able to get a discounted compost bin from your local council – the Get Composting  site will show you how.
  4. Take up the waste challenge to Slim Your Bin
